We're planning a renewal of Grigg Park in Hilton to make sure it meets the needs of all users.

The combination play unit, swings and basketball hoops and backboards are due for replacement as part of our playground works but we are also looking at the surrounding area.

Final concept

In 2018 we asked for your input into the activities you would like to do, facilities required and the style of replacement play equipment for Grigg Park. Nearly 100 locals contributed to the renewal of Grigg Park. The input was used as the basis for the concept design which maintains the current layout but includes:

  • New dog bags and bin provided in the north-west corner of the park near the open area.
  • Replacement drinking fountain including a dog bowl.
  • A replacement 'traditional' combination play unit including the most popular types of play – sliding and climbing.
  • New 'nature based' climbing and water play elements that integrate with the feel of the park. Recycled wood has been sourced for these elements.
  • Extra benches to offer a range of areas to enjoy the park.
  • New birds nest swing to suit all abilities and ages.
  • New backboards will be developed through the ‘Project Backboard Fremantle’ initiative involving a local artist and kids via the PCYC.

The final concept is below or can be downloaded here.

Construction of the Grigg Park renewal is now underway and will take approximately three weeks.

There are plenty of exciting new elements about to be installed but a few compromises needed to be made as the concept moved into delivery and quotation. The proposed relocation of the tables (#5 on the concept) to a new concrete pad will not proceed and they will remain in their current location, and the proposed water play element (#2 on the concept) could not be included. The compromises were required as all quotations exceeded the available budget. Other proposed elements are unchanged.

During the January school holidays these stunning new backboards were made for Grigg Park through a community urban art project called 'Project Backboard' held at the PCYC.

Resurfacing of the circular bitumen track as part of the City's maintenance program will also be timed in conjunction with the renewal works.

Based on the feedback from the draft no major adjustments were necessary and the final concept is now ready. Minor adjustments may happen throughout the procurement and construction phases.

Grigg Park construction is due to be carried out February/March 2019, an update will be sent once the dates are confirmed with suppliers.

Both logs and upright timber sleepers to be made from recycled wood have been sourced locally for the project. The City is also attempting to source recycled boulders and soakwell but this is yet to be confirmed.

New backboards will be developed through the ‘Project Backboard Fremantle’ initiative involving a local artist and kids via the PCYC. Two new full height posts and rings will also be installed - the City extensively researched ways to provide both short and full height basketball rings but was unable to find any products that are manufactured. While suppliers manufacture units with a (same height) netball hoop none were found that manufacture a lower height on the back (the current lower height has just been installed lower in the ground). Reversible units are not suitable for a public park as they require a key/pole to adjust/ rotate or are built for indoor/private use and not vandal proof. A custom unit and extending the bitumen area would cost double the available budget, there are also a number of trees in the space behind the rings.

The City could only supply one style of swing so chose the basket swing as they are recognised as catering to all ages and abilities, they also encourage social interaction.

A community planting event using native plants will be organised around April or May during the cooler conditions - stay tuned for more information!
