Our Coastal Future Adopted
Share Our Coastal Future Adopted on Facebook Share Our Coastal Future Adopted on Twitter Share Our Coastal Future Adopted on Linkedin Email Our Coastal Future Adopted linkOur Coastal Future - Port, Leighton and Mosman Beaches Coastal Adaptation Plan (2017) was adopted by Council on 22 November 2017.
Sections of the Port, Leighton and Mosman beaches are exposed, and vulnerable to coastal processes, including erosion and inundation. Over time, the coast will become increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of sea level rise, storm surges and changes in sediment transport and natural sediment stores.
This plan has been prepared to adapt to the changing coast at Port, Leighton and Mosman Beaches, and provides recommended timeframes and trigger points for decision-making and planning for the area. The plan has been prepared as the first iteration of an evolving, long-term planning and decision-making process for the City of Fremantle and Town of Mosman Park, the community and key stakeholders to adapt our settlements and infrastructure to coastal processes – including risks of coastal erosion and inundation.

Draft plan released for public comment
Share Draft plan released for public comment on Facebook Share Draft plan released for public comment on Twitter Share Draft plan released for public comment on Linkedin Email Draft plan released for public comment linkIn 2016 we engaged with the community on what they most valued about Port, Leighton and Mosman Beaches. As a result of the feedback, we've prepared a plan which aims to respect these views, whilst managing erosion and inundation issues along the beaches.
Key adaptation options include engineered dune stabilisation with revegetation and nourishment at Mosman Beach, beach monitoring and dune stabilisation along Leighton Beach and the Port Beach dunes, and a seawall and nourishment or dune stabilisation, revegetation and nourishment at Port Beach north and south - Sandtracks.
A full copy of the draft coastal adaptation plan is available: Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan for the Port, Leighton and Mosman Beaches.
We'd like to hear your feedback on the adaptation pathways and options. Feedback closes 6 October 2017.

Community Values Survey Results
Share Community Values Survey Results on Facebook Share Community Values Survey Results on Twitter Share Community Values Survey Results on Linkedin Email Community Values Survey Results linkOver 300 people completed the community values survey in July/August 2016. The majority of respondents lived within a 10-15 minute drive of Leighton, Mosman or Port Beach.
What did we hear?
Through this survey we heard the two most important elements at these beaches are access to recreation opportunities (exercising, ocean recreation, dog access, fishing) as well as coastal amenity (beach access, views, natural vegetation).Similarly, for 90% of respondents the loss of these two elements would negatively impact their way of life. See the results in graph 1 and 2 below.
Do these results reflect your values?
Please provide your feedback by 5pm Monday 27 February 2017.What will the survey results be used for?
The next phase of the project will look at the most appropriate options for coastal adaptation. This will involve a detailed assessment, combining the technical risk assessment with the community values identified in the survey. For more detailed information on the technical assessment please see the Our Coastal Future project page.Once this assessment has been completed a draft adaptation plan will be finalised and available for community comment on My Say Freo.

What is coastal adaptation planning?
Share What is coastal adaptation planning? on Facebook Share What is coastal adaptation planning? on Twitter Share What is coastal adaptation planning? on Linkedin Email What is coastal adaptation planning? linkThe coast has always been a dynamic, changing environment. As we have settled on the coast, continued changing of the coast line presents risk and impacts to our coastal assets – including social, environmental, and economic assets and values.
Adaptation planning is about being ready to manage the risks and impacts of changes to our coast line, by planning for the most appropriate decisions and options to implement over time. -
