Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their feedback on location one and ideas for location two of the South Terrace Streetscape Improvement.

Key topics and ideas raised (both positive and negative) include pedestrian crossing, speed of traffic, trees, white lines, parking, street furniture and speed bumps. You can find this compiled in the feedback report, available here.

Update on location one – Tactiles have now been installed at location one. The need for line marking is also noted and Main Roads WA are responsible for carrying out line marking at the completion of our works. Main Roads were requested to complete the line marking and we are anticipating installation during March. A loading bay for businesses is proposed along Little Lefroy Lane.

Location two - We're incorporating your feedback on street furniture, bins, bike racks, trees and shade, tactiles and parking for location two. The City will make the order of works clear and explain the process (e.g. line marking). Another idea is to create an ‘explainer’ to communicate how the new drainage works. An increased focus is already being given to consulting with businesses at the intersection and supplying detailed information in advance, and continuing updates.

Location two will be completed in two phases. The first is in ground drainage works to prepare for the streetscape improvement and phase two is the streetscape improvement which is subject to funding in the 2019/20 budget.

A splash of colour has provided the finishing flourish to the City of Fremantle’s streetscape enhancements on the popular South Terrace café strip in South Fremantle.

The upgrade, between Sydney Street and Little Lefroy Lane, features new road surfaces and footpaths painted in vibrant colours inspired by Fremantle's street art.

It also includes new bike racks and seating, street trees and drainage improvements. Read more.

The upgrade features:

• new road surfaces and footpaths, painted in vibrant colours, inspired by Fremantle's street art.
• new bike racks and seating, also in vibrant colours.
• new street trees. In keeping with the existing street trees, these will be London plane trees.
• new rubbish bins.
• new stormwater infrastructure.

The work will commence end May 2018.

Council approved plans to improve the streetscape along the South Terrace café strip in South Fremantle on 13 December 2017. You can access the council minutes here.

Subject to final approval from Main Roads WA, work on the upgrade will begin in early 2018 and is expected to be completed by mid-year.

The consultation process for the South Terrace pedestrian safety and streetscape improvements ended on 10 November 2018. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

We received 117 responses to the survey that gave us some valuable feedback on the proposed traffic treatment and streetscape improvements to South Terrace, between Sydney Street and Little Lefroy Lane.

This is what you told us:

• 72.6% of people support the proposed changes, with 53.8% indicating they ‘strongly support’ the changes and a further 18.8% supportive of ‘most changes’.
• The proposal to improve the streetscape was the most supported change, with over 90% of respondents answering positively to the proposed new paving, street furniture, trees and planting.
• The proposal to reduce the carriageway to a trafficable width of 7 metres is the least supported change. While 58.2 % of people support narrowing the road to make it easier for people to cross the street safely, 22.2 % felt this would create more dangerous conditions for cyclists.
• The need for South Terrace to be calmed from South Street to Douro Road was mentioned by numerous people, along with the need to protect the interests of people living in the side streets. A plan for the area bounded by South Street, Douro Road, Marine Terrace and Hampton Road was suggested, following concerns that the proposed treatment at Little Lefroy and South Terrace will create traffic problems elsewhere.
• The need for a cycle lane on South Terrace between South Street and Douro Road was frequently mentioned, along with a desire to see similar treatments implemented at other nodes in this section.

Council will make a decision on the design to be built when they meet on Wednesday 13 December 2108 at 6.00 pm.

The report to council recommends:

• The road be narrowed to make it safer for people to cross the street and encourage drivers to slow down in this section.
• The temporary speed bumps be replaced with a raised platform to slow drivers down.
• The road be surfaced with red asphalt and stencil markings to slow drivers down.
• The footpath be widened, new paving, street furniture, paving and trees be added to improve the street.
• The amount of alfresco space be increased.

Feedback on proposed upgrades to South Terrace, between Sydney Street and Little Lefroy Lane has now closed. The City of Fremantle will now review and collate the feedback.

We expect to present the outcomes of the community engagement and recommend a plan to council, when they meet on 13 December 2107.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the council meeting and address elected members before they deliberate and make their decision.

Thanks to the residents and business owners who attended the public session on 2 November 2017 at the Meeting Place in South Fremantle. We've added the following information in response to questions we were asked at the session.

What's the overall plan for South Terrace between Douro Road and South Street?

The City has proposed a five year plan for South Terrace as part of the South Terrace Traffic calming and street scape improvement between Douro Road and South Street. The below proposed nodes are subject to council funds. The development and design will be dependent on the success and feedback of the first node at Little Lefroy to Sydney Street.

The five proposed areas are indicated below. These will be designed and implemented between 2018 - 2019 financial year through to 2021 - 2022. The order of installation is yet to be determined.

• Charles St intersection node

• Jenkins St intersection node

• Nelson Street node

• Scott Street node

Are there any other improvements planned for South Terrace?

As part of streetscape improvement, entry statement works are planned for the Douro Road and South Street intersections, in addition to resurfacing works and pavement improvements.
