What is this project about?

The City of Fremantle is planning upgrades to the northern section of Booyeembara Park, focused on improving how this part of the park looks, feels and functions.

This includes renewing ageing areas, completing elements identified in earlier plans, and strengthening connections across the park and to surrounding spaces such as the LaunchPad facility currently in construction and new residential developments in the precinct.

The project is part of a long-term, community-led vision to support Booyeembara Park as a high-quality, inclusive and regionally significant public space.

The consultant produced designs presented to community for feedback at this stage of the project are draft concepts informed by previous work and refined via reference group workshops. The City of Fremantle is now inviting the community to let us know what excites them about the designs for each element within the park, what could be improved or is missing, and how well the designs align with the overarching park themes developed through decades of collaboration.

The Boo Park North project and design concepts have been guided by:

    • The Booyeembara Park Masterplan documents (1999 & 2020), as well all associated reports, plans and documents
    • Previous community consultation and engagement outcomes
    • Ongoing input from the Booyeembara Park Reference Group
    • Cultural guidance and engagement with Whadjuk Elders
    • Environmental and technical assessments
    • Integration requirements with surrounding projects

Why are upgrades to Booyeembarra Park happening now?

This project responds to a combination of factors:

    • Some areas of the northern park are ageing or due for renewal
    • Some elements identified in earlier plans have not yet been delivered
    • The park is experiencing increased use and growing demand
    • Changes to the surrounding area are affecting how the Boo Park is accessed and experienced - most importantly the construction of the adjacent Launchpad golf facility, which is now under construction

Together, these factors mean it is the right time to design and prepare delivery for the next stage of improvements.

What areas or features are being considered for concept design?

The Boo Park North project includes a coordinated set of upgrades across the northern section of the park, including:

    • Park entrance and arrival area south of LaunchPad facility
    • Olive Grove
    • Storytelling Circle
    • Playground
    • Multicourt recreation area
    • Skatepark
    • Wren Sanctuary
    • Amphitheatre
    • Future Lookout & access
    • Future paths and trails
    • Future toilets

Has the community been consulted before?

Yes. Booyeembara Park has been shaped by extensive community involvement over many years, including:

    • Original master planning in the late 1990s
    • Ongoing input from the Booyeembara Park Reference Group
    • Previous engagement on park upgrades and recreation spaces
    • The Booyeembara Park Masterplan (endorsed 2020)
    • The Landscape Plan adopted in 2021

This project builds on that foundation and continues the conversation.

What is the City seeking feedback on now?

We are seeking community feedback on the design concepts created for elements within the northern section of Boo Park. This input will help guide and inform:

    • How different spaces should be used and experienced
    • Upgraded or new play, recreation and community facilities
    • How to balance nature, habitat and active use
    • Cultural recognition and storytelling opportunities
    • Accessibility, safety and movement through the park

How will the project be delivered?

The upgrades will be delivered in stages over time, rather than all at once.

    Staging will be guided by:

    • Available funding and grants
    • Technical feasibility and site conditions

Some elements may be delivered in the short term, while others will be planned for the medium to longer term.

    When will the upgrades happen?

The project is currently in the planning and design phase.

    • Community feedback will help shape the concept design
    • Designs will then be refined and presented for endorsement
    • Construction will occur in stages over the coming years

Timing will depend on funding, approvals and project readiness, but early-stage works may begin in FY 2027 once designs are finalised.
