The arts, cultural and creative ecology of Walyalup | Fremantle is precious and widely acknowledged as a place of artistic and cultural significance nationally. We owe our unique identity, in part, to the history of involvement of artistic, cultural, and creative expression by generations of extraordinary artists and cultural and creative workers who lived, and continue to live and work here, as part of an interconnected community.

The City of Fremantle last undertook detailed cultural planning in 2003. Two decades on, it is time to come together to reflect, discuss and dream about creative Walyalup | Fremantle — all it has been, all it is now and all that we want it to be for the future.

This process will give form to an Arts, Culture & Creative Strategy which will be the City of Fremantle’s ten-year commitment to nurturing the culture of Walyalup | Fremantle.

Through this consultation we want to understand your aspirations, ideas and needs to ensure:

  • Everyone in Walyalup | Fremantle can benefit from meaningful arts, culture, and creative experiences.
  • That artists and creatives can continue to live, work, learn and play in Walyalup | Fremantle.

We couldn’t wish for a better community of people full of great ideas and a big social conscience with which to make decisions. We know that the dilemmas arising from ongoing gentrification, a finite ratepayer base, fragile creative industries, nostalgia for the past, sky-high community expectations, empty and run-down infrastructure, heritage buildings needing care and pandemic recovery may all challenge us in this process, however, if we’re aiming for a place that hums with life, creativity, and culture - that attracts truly diverse art makers, creatives, and audiences - it’s you we want to be in conversation with to find ways forward to an increasingly positive future.

How to get involved:

  1. Please read the consultation document HERE or in the document library to the right
  2. You can fill in the Survey HERE
  3. You can subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed
  4. You can join a drop in session or attend the weekend of Courageous Conversations - dates are published in the key dates session
  5. You can email the Senior Arts Officer directly to organise a chat via the Who's Listening section to the right.
  6. You can invite the Senior Arts Officer to your place of work, precinct group, school, beach, park, or wherever is best for a chat
  7. Please share this MySay Page with any artists, creatives, or people you think would be interested in this project, as we really want many voices and diverse views to inform the Strategy

In conjunction with the Art's Culture & Creative Strategy, the City is also undertaking a major review of the Strategic Community Plan. One of the key themes is Creative City.

Fremantle’s arts, cultural, and creative ecology is precious, and we owe our unique identity, in part, to the generations of artists and creatives who lived, and continue to live and work here today. We are proudly a creative city, but how do we evolve as one?

Walyalup | Fremantle has been a place of significant cultural practice for tens of thousands of years. Today we have the greatest concentration of artists and creatives across the state living and working here.

Anchored by the Fremantle Arts Centre, Western Australia’s creative heart extends to all corners of the City of Fremantle. It exists on the ever-changing murals that grace the brick walls of our buildings. Music and performances reverberate from one grassy backyard to another. Architects, film makers, and artists craft the visual tapestry that makes Fremantle’s city-scape so unique. We are a city flush with festivals throughout the seasons that last for a day, weekend, or an entire month. Our port town is a stage for local and globally recognised creatives across all formats.

How can we continue to punch above our weight when it comes to creative services in Fremantle?

How can our creative strength unlock even greater potential for Fremantle’s economy?

What do we need to offer artists and makers to thrive—be it physical spaces or mentoring support?

What is our vision for a broader industry of creative services that will attract individuals and companies to set up shop here in Fremantle?

This is a “Courageous Conversation” about the crucial role arts & culture plays in the success and future of Fremantle. We’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on how we can further this hot-button topic together.
