The arts, cultural and creative ecology of Walyalup | Fremantle is precious and widely acknowledged as a place of artistic and cultural significance nationally. We owe our unique identity, in part, to the history of involvement of artistic, cultural, and creative expression by generations of extraordinary artists and cultural and creative workers who lived, and continue to live and work here, as part of an interconnected community.

The City of Fremantle last undertook detailed cultural planning in 2003. Two decades on, it is time to come together to reflect, discuss and dream about creative Walyalup | Fremantle — all it has been, all it is now and all that we want it to be for the future.

This process will give form to an Arts, Culture & Creative Strategy which will be the City of Fremantle’s ten-year commitment to nurturing the culture of Walyalup | Fremantle.

Through this consultation we want to understand your aspirations, ideas and needs to ensure:

  • Everyone in Walyalup | Fremantle can benefit from meaningful arts, culture, and creative experiences.
  • That artists and creatives can continue to live, work, learn and play in Walyalup | Fremantle.

We couldn’t wish for a better community of people full of great ideas and a big social conscience with which to make decisions. We know that the dilemmas arising from ongoing gentrification, a finite ratepayer base, fragile creative industries, nostalgia for the past, sky-high community expectations, empty and run-down infrastructure, heritage buildings needing care and pandemic recovery may all challenge us in this process, however, if we’re aiming for a place that hums with life, creativity, and culture - that attracts truly diverse art makers, creatives, and audiences - it’s you we want to be in conversation with to find ways forward to an increasingly positive future.

How to get involved:

  1. Please read the consultation document HERE or in the document library to the right

  6. You can invite the Senior Arts Officer to your place of work, precinct group, school, beach, park, or wherever is best for a chat
  7. Please share this MySay Page with any artists, creatives, or people you think would be interested in this project, as we really want many voices and diverse views to inform the Strategy
