Consultation has concluded
We’re planning changes to the turfed areas at Alfred Park to align with current water wise irrigation practices.
In order to improve the condition of the turfed areas at Alfred Park, we will be replacing the irrigation system. At the same time we are proposing to hydrozone areas where turf is difficult to maintain or no longer required.
Hydrozoning includes the removal of non-water wise turf areas and turning them into mulched areas, some of which can be planted with water wise native plants and trees.
Final upgrade plan
In October/November 2019 we sought your input on the proposed plans for the irrigation upgrade and hydrozoning. Using this feedback, a final plan has been developed.
We heard that you did not want the mound on the eastern embankment hydrozoned, so this will be retained as turf.
Access to the exercise equipment in the north west corner will be retained.
The sit up bench and stepper on the northern boundary must have a fall zone underneath as per Australian Standards, and so soft fall mulch will be placed under these areas.
The turfed area on the corner of Rule and Alfred Streets will also be hydrozoned, as it is difficult and unsustainable to maintain the turf in this area.
We heard that you would like seating and nature play in the area. While the main objective is irrigation changes and hydrozoning to reduce water use in Alfred Park, the City will look at installing one or two benches once the upgrades are complete, and will investigate options for nature play in the future as timber becomes available.

Proposed Hydrozoning Alfred Park
Dark green areas will be hydrozoned gardens (may be mulched or planted). Red elements are existing exercise equipment, with the fall zones around them in yellow. To open a full size view of this plan, click here or visit the document library on this page.
Installation of the irrigation upgrade is anticipated to begin in May/June 2020. All plants used will be native, including including a mix of local species. Estimated date for planting is Winter 2020, most likely July.
