Consultation has concluded

The City of Fremantle will begin constructing a multipurpose sports court at South Beach in September 2017.

Community consultation on this project began in 2015 and has included feedback from basketball, futsal, roller-hockey, volleyball and wheelchair basketball groups to understand their needs and how the court could combine these requirements to create a multi-use facility.

The new facility’s location has been carefully considered based on this feedback and will also address the need for additional full size public courts within the City of Fremantle. You can view the concept plan here.

Through the consultation, we received a very clear message to consider ways to make the court suitable for a range of sports.

As part of our planning and concept design preparation, we’ve been speaking to potential user groups, including basketball, futsal, roller-hockey, volleyball and wheelchair basketball. These discussions have helped us to better understand the particular requirements of each group and work out how the court can function as a multi-use facility.

If you are part of a group that would be intererested to be part of this discussion, please contact Ella Youel on 9432 9999 or email parksandlandscape@fremantle.wa.gov.au
  • Outcomes and next steps

A key outcome of the community workshop was to decide the southern end of South Beach on the western side of the grassed areas as the preferred location (option 3) for the court.

The next step is for the City to review the workshop outcomes and plan for the installation of the court. We will use this feedback to inform the design of a draft concept plan.

While we anticipated the draft concept plan would be released for community feedback in early-2016, due to unexpected delays it is now expected to be released in early-2017. We thank you for your patience.

At this stage, construction of the new court is expected to commence mid-2017.

Until then, please feel free to contact Ella Youel, Projects Officer Landscapes on 9432 9999 or by email: parksandlandscape@fremantle.wa.gov.au

Thanks to all those who provided feedback on the location options for the court at South Beach. We had a great response with over 40 people joining us to evaluate the pros and cons of three location options and prioritise court facilities.

A report on the workshop outcomes is available here.

The City Of Fremanlte is building on past conversations with the community to inform plans to to reinstate the basketball courts at South Beach.

Council has reached a decision regarding the area in which the court will be located and is looking to engage stakeholders to decide the best location within South Beach Reserve and the type of facilities required. A budget of $165 000 was approved by council in June.

We're inviting all interested community members to participate in a workshop on 12 November to assess three different location options and identify preferred amenties.
