What other beaches and rivers within the City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle were considered?

An independent study by Stantec Australia looked at the following beaches and rivers:

    • South Beach
    • Bathers Beach
    • Port Beach
    • Leighton Beach
    • North Fremantle Swan River Foreshore
    • Harvey Beach
    • John Tonkin Reserve (Town of East Fremantle)
    • Swan River Yacht Club (Town of East Fremantle)
    • East Fremantle Yacht Club (Town of East Fremantle)

How were the optimal sites for installation barriers chosen?

The optimal sites for installation of barriers were chosen based on further, more detailed analysis of the four top ranking sites: South Beach, Leighton Beach and Bathers Beach in the City of Fremantle, and John Tonkin Reserve in the Town of East Fremantle.

For a detailed analysis please refer to the Stantec Report here.

Why was Bathers Beach endorsed as the preferred location over other beach locations?

The report considered the investment required to install and maintain a shark barrier at each of the locations. It also considered key elements of each prospective site including physical, social and environmental. You can read the full report here.

How much is the barrier at Bathers Beach estimated to cost?

An estimate of costs was determined by seeking a ‘Request for Information’ from two commercially available shark barrier suppliers in Perth.

The estimated Capital Cost Range for a net length of ~340m: $585,040 - $680,000

Estimated Annual Operation Costs: $68,000 (no seasonal removal) $121,000 (annual removal and reinstallation for the winter period)

    Who will fund the project?

The Western Australian Government has funding available for the capital expenditure associated with installing shark barriers / enclosures. Five such barrier systems installed in WA have received entire or partial funding through this program. This funding does not extend to the operational costs for ongoing maintenance and this would be the City’s responsibility. There may also be opportunities for private contribution’s towards the capital or operating expenses for the shark net.
