The Hilton pocket park is ready to use! With construction complete, local residents and City staff were busy planting out the new garden beds on Saturday 16 December.

The pocket park provides usable open space within walking distance for residents in this area of Hilton. It incorporates nature play, a small picnic area, pathways and new plantings. Further enhancements will take place next year.

Exciting news - construction of the Hilton Pocket Park is starting very soon and we aim to have the works completed early December 2017.

Planting can take place as soon as the landscaping is finished and we're looking for helpers for half a day to plant natives in the garden beds.

We know it’s a busy time close to Christmas so we would like to know your preference - we can get the plants in ready for Christmas, or we can wait until early January. Please express your interest and preferred date/s by 23 November 2017.

The construction budget for Hilton Pocket Park was approved by Fremantle Council on 28 June 2017 and adopted into the 2017/18 budget.

The detailed design can now be prepared and will balance site access with safety. Construction will commence later in the year, in the meantime we are working to source reclaimed materials for the space.

Thank you to everyone who helped design the proposed park and provided their thoughts. We look forward to working with the local community as this project progresses and further updates will be provided to registered followers and on this page.

Thank you to everyone who provided their thoughts on the draft Hilton pocket park design. Overall, the design was received positively. The two main responses were to improve the active equipment for children and differing views on balancing pedestrian safety with access to the site.

In response to this, the ‘custom play item’ specified on the draft concept plan will now be a swing with other play elements for young and older kids. We are also looking at how to incorporate informal exercise elements.

We aim to design a space that carefully balances access to the site (for bikes, prams, wheelchairs and postal delivery) while inhibiting informal motorbike access and stopping young children doing a ‘bolt’ towards Hines Road. At this stage a carefully designed pedestrian chicane (or similar) remains the preferred option to achieve this as gates can provide problems with access and require more ongoing maintenance. The technical design will address this in further detail.

For information and responses to other queries see our FAQ on the draft design. You can also view the final concept design below or download a copy.

The draft concept plan for the Hilton pocket park is now ready for review. You can view the design and provide feedback now online. Please tell us your thoughts by 7 March 2017.

The design has been developed to provide a place for children to play, general landscaping and beautification, and a neighbourhood gathering place. It also aims to screen the industrial area, create an area safe from traffic whilst maintaining pedestrian access, and maintaining visual sight through the area for security.

A summary of community feedback received about the proposed Hilton pocket park can be downloaded on My Say Freo. A draft concept design incorporating the community priorities is under development by Josh Byrne & Associates and is currently being reviewed by City planning and parks staff.

The design will be uploaded on this website and we will notify participants by email, we anticipate this will be early January. Once it has been reviewed by the community it will be finalised and submitted to Council.

Thank you to everyone who came to the community design workshop on October 29 in Hilton.

The majority of people who completed the online survey and attended the information session on 8 October said they would like the pocket park to provide a space for children to play. It was great to have local children design and present their ideas for the pocket park at the workshop.

Local residents who couldn’t attend the workshop are invited to contribute their ideas to the online forum by 14 November.
