What are we doing?

We're launching a public engagement program that seeks your insights, ideas, and aspirations for the future physical location of the Fremantle History Centre. We also want to understand what other opportunities and offerings we can include in the History Centre – for example an online platform to enhance the accessibility of the centre.

What does our History Centre Offer?

    Our comprehensive collection includes:

    • Photographs: Capturing moments frozen in time, our vast photographic collection reveals the changing landscapes and faces of Fremantle and East Fremantle.
    • Biographical Files: Delve into the lives of notable individuals who have made their mark on our community.
    • Newspapers: Journey back in time through the pages of history, exploring the headlines, stories, and events that defined our city.
    • Council Minutes and Agendas: Uncover the decisions, debates, and aspirations that have steered the course of our city.
    • Publications: An archive of publications that provide insights into our community's evolution.
    • Maps and Plans: Trace the growth and transformation of Fremantle through our collection of maps and plans.

Where is the current History Centre located?

Our History Centre has an exhibition space inside Walyalup Civic Centre on the ground floor with a temporary home for the History Centre in the space adjacent. The purpose of this public engagement program is to ascertain the community’s needs and wants for the History Centre and determine a physical permanent location for the History Centre.

Why is this important to you?

This engagement exercise is an opportunity for you to:

    • Share your passion for local history.
    • Reveal how you utilise our collections and what is important to you.
    • Discover the power of a history centre and how it can benefit the community.
    • Strengthen relationships within our community and highlight the community volunteer program and further lifelong learning opportunities.
    • Ensure that we meet your needs and desires.
    • Celebrate our local history collection and make it accessible to all.
    • Elevate the profile of heritage and history in Fremantle.

    How can you get involved?

    • We encourage you to share your thoughts via the survey here.
    • You can also attend our upcoming information sessions. Please view the key dates on the My Say page.

When can I speak to someone?

We will be hosting a series of community sessions where you can talk to us in person. The key dates section of the My Say page has more information.
