Greening Samson
Consultation has concluded
Mapping and thermal imaging carried out for the Urban Forest Plan identified that Samson is a ‘hot spot’ with little canopy cover outside the reserve.
Green spaces and trees provide a range of economic, social and environmental benefits. As the number of extreme heat days increase annually and average temperatures continue to rise, methods to cool our cities are also increasingly important for public health.
Several species of plants have been chosen across Samson and will be planted in winter 2018.
Each year the City of Fremantle invites residents to request a free street tree for their verge. As part of the newly adopted Urban Forest Plan, this year we are trialing a new approach in Samson. Species were carefully selected based on existing planting in the street, proximity to bushland, power lines and foot paths.

The suburb of Samson had the highest tree planting numbers across the City in 2017/18, with 212 trees planted.
Mapping undertaken for the Urban Forest Plan identified Samson had some of the lowest canopy coverage in Fremantle, which meant Samson was on average two degrees hotter than nearby suburbs due to the urban heat island effect. Read more.

More Trees for Samson

The blue shading represents an important biodiversity ‘green link’ running through Samson.
This has implications for community health, so in 2018 the City of Fremantle is prioritising Samson in its annual winter planting programme, with the aim of introducing hundreds of new trees to the suburb.
Most of these will be verge plantings, however there are other opportunities to introduce new trees. If you are interesting in being involved in community engagement opportunities for the Samson priority planting please email communityengagement@fremantle.wa.gov.au
