Beach Street Public Toilet Facility & Public Art Project

The Beach Street Public Toilet Facility project will bring a new, universally accessible 24-hour public toilet facility to Fremantle, ensuring continuous support for all members of the community. Share your thoughts on the proposed plans.

At the 27 November 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting(External link), council approved $380,000 to be allocated to the Beach Street Public Toilet Facility project.

Public toilets are an essential part of the city’s infrastructure, supporting public health, accessibility and quality of life for everyone. The Beach Street Public Toilet Facility will introduce a new, universally accessible public toilet facility in Fremantle, strategically located to serve all members of the community, including city commuters, skate park users, and those utilising essential services operating out of the Beach Street location.

The Beach Street Public Toilet Facility project aims to:

• Reinforce the City of Fremantle's commitment to inclusivity, public health, and the well-being of all its residents.
• Provide 24-hour essential amenities in a safe, inclusive and dignified environment to support public health for all users in the City.
• Ensure clear communication to keep local residents, stakeholders and the broader community aware and informed throughout the project's progress.

Call for Artists - Beach Street Public Art EOI:

City officers are also collecting Expressions of Interest from local artists to design a public artwork for the exterior of the facility. Once the design is selected and finalised, the City will coordinate the printing and installation of the vinyl wrap on the toilet unit. The successful public artwork will:

• Create a welcoming, respectful environment that discourages vandalism of the amenity and promotes positive community interaction.
• Highlight Fremantle's distinct character, transforming a utilitarian space into an engaging, memorable part of the public realm.
• Promote inclusivity and foster community pride and engagement with Fremantle’s creative scene.

We are asking the public to:

• Review the Beach Street Public Amenity plans by exploring the Frequently Asked Questions and explainer documents listed below.
• Contribute feedback on the project and offer best practice examples of similar public amenities via the Survey below.
• Share your experience of the Beach St. location, how it is currently utilised and what is missing.
• Provide a written submission or request a 1:1 meeting with a City Officer.

How can you meet with City Officers to discuss your feedback or EOI application?

• 1:1 Meeting: Would you like to meet 1:1 with City Officers to get clarification on the Beach Street Amenity project or talk through your Public Art EOI application? You can request a meeting by emailing communityengagement@fremantle.wa.gov.au(External link). Please note, we'll aim to meet all requests subject to staff availability.

City Officers aim to:

• Work with the community to identify key areas for improvement and prioritise future amenity upgrades and locations that best suit their needs.
  
• Keep you informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and provide feedback on how public input influenced the project.
• Work with you to ensure that your concerns and aspirations are noted; provide clarity on questions that may arise.
