The City of Fremantle is seeking to identify and understand the needs and aspirations of older people in our community to inform the 2025-30 Age Friendly Plan.

The purpose of the Age-Friendly Plan is to prioritise positive ageing opportunities for the Fremantle community and promote Fremantle as a great place for older people to visit. The City's journey to becoming an Age-Friendly City started in 2010 and in 2016 the City of Fremantle was accepted as a member to the World Health Organisation Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, an initiative that works to stimulate and enable cities and communities around the world to become increasingly age-friendly by:

  • Inspiring change by showing what can be done and how it can be done;
  • Connecting cities and communities worldwide to facilitate the exchange of information, knowledge and experience; and
  • Supporting cities and communities to find appropriate innovative and evidence-based solutions.

In 2018 the City of Fremantle was recognised for its efforts by taking out the Age-Friendly Local Government category at the West Australian Seniors Awards in November 2018 and being a finalist in both 2023 and 2024. The current Age-Friendly Plan has guided City initiatives as we work together to create a more age-friendly community but is now in need of a refresh. Public feedback collected during this engagement process will inform the City’s approach for the development of a new Age-Friendly Plan 2025-2030 and help us understand demographic trends to be prepared for the future, as well as explore any issues, barriers and concerns older people may have.

We are seeking input from as many older people as possible who have a connection to Fremantle, including those who live, visit, socialise or learn here. Your input will help us plan for an age-friendly future—shaping programs, services, and activities that support ageing well. By sharing your experiences, needs, and concerns, you’ll help us identify key trends and address the issues that matter most to our older community.

The City's Age Friendly Plan 2025-30 seeks to:

  • Anticipate and respond to the needs of the city’s ageing population in a respectful and inclusive way.
  • Share understanding with the wider community to value the contributions of older adults and encourage meaningful connections in everyday life.
  • Support community aspirations to age well based on what is valuable and meaningful to older people.
  • Demonstrate a robust commitment from the City to foster relationships, honour respect, and enhance opportunities for older people.

We are asking the public to:

  • Help the City of Fremantle educate and champion a whole of community approach for Age-friendly planning.
  • Submit feedback by completing the Age-friendly Plan survey.
  • Provide a written submission or request to meet with city staff to discuss the Age Friendly Plan via a 1:1 or group meeting.
