Why is the City running this campaign?

Over the past 12 months, City officers conducted an extensive engagement program called Safe and Functional Streets. The program collaborated directly with residents across Fremantle to better understand the types of road safety and traffic calming solutions the community preferred, as well as updating our council policies to meet the community’s needs.

The Safe & Functional Streets engagement program aimed to achieve the following for the City and its residents:

    • Raise awareness and educate the community about both policies.
    • Enhance the City's communication and engagement on matters related to Traffic Calming and Narrow Streets.
    • Clarify the distinctions between traffic issues and traffic calming.
    • Create opportunities for an in-depth understanding of challenges and the co-creation of effective solutions with the public.

Public feedback gathered during this program emphasised that speed reduction initiatives were high on our community’s list of needs (alongside other physical interventions). An education campaign was highlighted as a crucial solution that residents are keen to be a part of. Go Slow in Freo is City recognition of the commitment to collaborate with residents in the promotion of a speed reduction campaign for Fremantle neighbourhoods, sending the message that slower speeds equal safer streets.

Who can apply for the bin sticker design competition?

Go Slow in Freo aims to be a collaborative program that unites a young Fremantle artist and local residents to promote the message that slower speeds equal safer streets! The successful sticker design will visibly promote the initiative to drivers who live, work, or visit Fremantle to slow down in their neighbourhoods.

Entrants to the Go Slow in Freo sticker competition must be between the ages of 4 - 18 year old.

The successful entrant must also have a connection to, or live within, the City of Fremantle.

What is the City looking for?

Go Slow in Freo is an opportunity for the City of Fremantle to collaborate with our community to produce a unique looking sticker campaign on rubbish bins around the City.

We’re looking for artists aged between 4 - 18 that can create:

    • A colourful, exciting sticker design that promotes the message:  slower speeds equal safer streets
The winning design will be unique, attractive and visibly promote the initiative to drivers who live, work, or visit Fremantle to slow down in their neighbourhoods.

What do I need to include as part of my competition entry?

In addition to creating your Go Slow in Freo bin sticker design on the A4 template, all applicants must submit a completed entry form.

You can download the entry form and sticker template here.

What prize will the winner of the bin sticker competition receive?

The winner will receive a voucher to the value of $500 to be spent at a local bicycle business in Fremantle of their choosing.

Where can I collect a Go Slow for Freo bin sticker?

If you would like updates on the competition winner, as well as where the City of Fremantle Community Engagement team will be popping up in March 2025 to hand out free Go Slow for Freo bin stickers, you can subscribe to the MySay mailing list here.

Subject to availability, there will also be bin stickers available downstairs at the Walyalup Civic Centre, just ask at reception.

Are there other speed reduction/traffic calming measures being planned for the City?

The Safe and Functional Streets program allowed City officers to log public feedback about a variety of traffic and road calming issues within their Fremantle neighbourhoods.

Go Slow in Freo is a campaign that implements strategies and responds to feedback collected over this 12-month engagement process. Subscribe to the MySay online newsletter to receive project updates and news of new road safety projects initiatives that are rolling out in Fremantle in 2025.
