Dog Policy & Local Law Review: Survey

Review of Dog Exercise and Prohibited Areas Council Policy and Local Laws relating to dogs

In accordance with section 3.12 and 3.16 of the Local Government Act 1995, the City of Fremantle gives public notice that:

 

  1. The City of Fremantle Local Laws relating to dogs is proposed to be reviewed, in accordance with the approved schedule adopted by Council.
  2. The City of Fremantle proposes to make the City of Fremantle Dogs Amendment Local Law 2026.

The purpose and effect of this local law is:

Purpose: Amend the City of Fremantle Local Laws relating to dogs (Principal Local Law), to remove redundant provisions and update clauses and definitions to align with current operations.

Effect: The City of Fremantle Local Laws relating to dogs are amended.

 

Following adoption by Council, the abovementioned local law will come into operation 14 days after their publication in the Government Gazette.


The City of Fremantle is simultaneously undertaking a review of the Dog Exercise and Prohibited Areas Policy.


The City is now seeking public feedback on the above Local Law, both in current format and proposed, and the draft amended Dog Exercise and Prohibited Areas Council Policy. Please note, the survey is for pet-owners and non-pet owners to complete.

  • Contribute feedback by completing the survey below.
  • Provide a written submission or request a 1:1 meeting with a City Officer.

Copies of the Local Laws and Policy can be viewed on the MySay page for this topic, as well as hard copies being available for inspection at Walyalup Civic Centre.

Dogs in Playgrounds

A Playground or Play Space is an area set aside/ designated for outdoor recreation and play, typically incorporating fixed or non‑fixed children’s play equipment, nature‑based or informal play elements and may include sand, rubber, bark, grass, or another impact‑attenuating (soft‑fall) surface.

As stated under the Dog Act 1976 – SECT 8, Guide and Assistance Dogs are allowed access to everywhere their handler goes – and this includes dogs in training.
