What are precinct groups? What do they do?

Precinct groups are run by community members who reside in the same residential area of Fremantle, who often share the same community aims, desires and concerns for their neighbourhood. In other words, precinct groups are run by people like you!

Precinct meetings are administered by nominated volunteer representatives known as precinct convenors, who schedule meetings on a regular or semi-regular basis (often monthly, quarterly), or as items in the local area arise.

Meetings are organised and hosted by precinct convenors, with the aim of creating an open forum where community members feel not only welcome to attend and discuss a variety of community issues, but also to take an active role in precinct group events.

Precinct groups therefore enhance communication and act as the conduit between residents, local authorities, and other stakeholders. Most importantly, they offer a platform for addressing issues impacting the locality, including safety, infrastructure, zoning, and community events.

The meetings are also an avenue for informing the City of Fremantle of community opinion and maintaining two-way communication between community members and the City officers.

How much financial assistance do precinct groups get from the City?

The City of Fremantle Precinct Group Policy states:

    Financial support

    1. The City may support precincts to a maximum value of $850 per financial year, in accordance with relevant City policy, in the following way:

    • Venue hire.

    • Printing costs and distribution, for meeting flyers to promote a special precinct meeting or community activity.

    • Meeting refreshments (the City will not pay for alcohol).

    2. To be considered eligible for financial support, precinct groups must operate in compliance with the terms of this policy.

    3. Any funding for activities other than normal precinct meetings requested must be made, in writing, through the community engagement team.

    4. Precinct budget information can be made available to precincts on request.

    Reimbursements

    1. Cash reimbursement is available to cover expenses up to $50 when:

    • payments are made by cash or EFTPOS and a tax invoice has been provided

    • a receipt and contact details of the person making the claim has been provided within 3 months of the expenditure.

     2. Application for reimbursement over $50 must be made, in writing within 3 months of expenditure, accompanied by a copy of the invoice through the community engagement team

    How are precinct conveners selected?

Precinct groups organise amongst themselves to appoint or volunteer as conveners. Each group might have their own way of selecting or recruiting a convener.

What are the roles and responsibilities of precinct conveners?

Precinct conveners organise open forum meetings where any member of the community can attend to discuss and help find solutions to local issues, assist in turning community ideas into reality, organise local events, uncover future opportunities, nurture community bonding and celebrate civic participation.

I'm interested in running a precinct group. How can I become a precinct convener?

The City has a number of precinct groups that are in recess. If you're interested in leading one in your area, get in touch with the Community Engagement via email here: communityengagement@fremantle.wa.gov.au

I don't want to be a precinct convenor. How else can I support my local precinct group?

If you do not wish to put your hand up as a precinct convenor, or these positions are already filled, you can stay informed and assist your precinct group by attending meetings. You could also volunteer your time to:

    • Draft meeting agendas, take minutes, as well as provide other administrative support
    • Write newsletters
    • Moderate online precinct Facebook groups, pages and chats
    • Help organise or run a local precinct event
    • Nominate to set up and/or run a precinct sub-committee
    • Help promote your precinct groups and their activities in the wider community
