What is the City looking for?

Art on High is an opportunity for the City of Fremantle to collaborate with our community on public art that not only beautifies this space, but also encourages pedestrian safety and movement in the area.

Artists of any age or ability can submit their expression of interest and draft concept for consideration. This opportunity is open to individuals or groups.

We’re looking for artists that can:

    • Bring new life to eight planter boxes.
    • Create clarity and safety for pedestrian movement.
    • Enhance a tourist precinct with immense historical importance.
    • Create new excitement for an iconic streetscape in Fremantle.
    • Encourage collaboration with the City staff.

What will the City offer for applicants?

The City of Fremantle will provide the successful applicant with up to $4,000 of funding to design and install their concept on the eight planter boxes.

Note: applicants can seek additional funding from external sources to increase their budget (e.g. other grants, fundraising, etc).

City staff from our Community Engagement, Arts & Culture, Infrastructure Engineering, and Parks and Landscape teams will also provide mentoring and support to help the successful applicant install their concept. City staff will also replace the existing vegetation with Bookleaf Mallee (botanical name: Eucalyptus Kruseana).

What date does the artwork need to be installed by?

The installation of all planter box art must be completed by May 2025.

What do I need to include as part of my submission?

    All applicants must submit:

    • A written description (no more than 1 A4 page) of the design concept and/or video (no more than 2 minutes) talking about the design concept.
    • Draft drawings, sketches and/or digital images that show colour and design of the concept.
    • If you are working with the community describe who are you working with, and how you will work with them.
    • CV, biography, group profile, or collective statement.
    Please note
    • The lead artist in the project will need appropriate insurance if engaged on the project.
    • Community groups are welcome to apply, as long as they engage with an artist as part of the project.

Can the street/footpath be incorporated into the design for the planter?

No - only the surfaces of each planter box are to be included in the EOI design. Painting of the street will not be considered for this project.

What other forms of external funding can we secure?

Applicants are welcome to conduct their own fundraising efforts to expand their budget.

Applicants can also apply for other grant funding opportunities that might be relevant. Please be aware that some grants do not allow applicants to combine funds from other sources.

Any additional grant funding needs to be secured in time to have artwork installed by May 2025.
