Call for Nominations - Significant Trees & Vegetation Areas Register
Nominate a significant tree or vegetation area for the City's Significant Trees and Vegetation Areas Register.
Council and many community members have long been concerned about the loss of trees within the City, and the negative effects this can have on the environment, climate and the amenity of the City’s neighbourhoods. However, unless formally included on the Register, there is little the City can do to prevent removal where a landowner wishes to do so.
Initial inclusion on the Register requires formal nomination, an assessment by the City, a public consultation period & an annual Council decision.
Key points in the nomination and inclusion process
1.Nomination - The tree or vegetation area must be nominated, or formally supported, by the owner of the land on which it is located.
The nomination form is available to lodge electronically here or download from the document library here. Nominations will be considered against specific criteria.
For more information on how to nominate your tree see the FAQs.
2.Assessment - The tree or vegetation area must demonstrate significance based on the criteria of:
- Botanic / horticultural value (e.g. rare or endangered species);
- Visual / aesthetic / landmark value;
- Heritage value; or
- Ecological value not otherwise protected through environmental legislation.
It must be a healthy specimen with ongoing viability. Viability considers factors such as proximity to buildings and infrastructure and development potential. Assessment may include the commission of an independent arboricultural report.
3.Comment - Once assessed a report will be provided to the land owner (and occupier if applicable). Comment on the assessment will be sought from the land owner, occupier and immediately neighbours for 21 days.
4.Report - A report to Council will be completed annually, with details of the nominated tree(s), assessment and feedback during consultation, for their decision.
