Green spaces and trees provide a range of economic, social and environmental benefits. The Fremantle 2029 visioning process identified a clear long-term vision for Fremantle to be a sustainable, liveable and vibrant place over the coming decades. In particular, green spaces were identified by the community as valuable assets.
Greening Fremantle: Strategy 2020provides a framework to deliver key projects over the next five years to implement a greener city. It is the culmination of work and input from the local community, Green Plan 2020 Working Group and City of Fremantle.
Key targets and initiatives include:
Every worker and resident to be within walking distance to public open space.
Progressively increase tree canopy across the city to achieve up to 20 percent.
Design adaptable open space that allows for future flexibility as the community and open space function and needs change over time.
Develop links that increase the amount of vegetation and increase habitat and movement between green spaces for native fauna.
A range of projects will be delivered to meet these targets, including new green spaces, improving green links for biodiversity, and an urban forest plan to reduce urban heat island effect.
You can read more about current projects in the related projects links. Further information on future projects will be provided here on My Say Freo; register today to stay informed.

Volunteering
with a local ‘Friends of’ group is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, learn
new skills and build knowledge across our city.
The City of Fremantle supports a number of volunteer groups who help
care for our beaches, bushland and river. If you’re interested in getting
involved, we’re
interested to know what sorts of activities you’d like to do and what skills
you can contribute. Tell us in this five minute survey!
Your feedback
will guide how we work with ‘Friends of’ groups in the future and help us to facilitate
meaningful, fun and rewarding volunteer activities.
Please complete the survey by 4pm Tuesday 25 April.
